The solar photovoltaic hot water system avoids the durability and installation problems associated with current solar thermal water heating systems.
The system employs photovoltaic modules to generate direct-current (DC) electrical power that is dissipated in the PTC DC heating element. The standard geyser element is replaced with a Geyserwise PTC 2000W AC/ 900W DC element, the PTC element continuously adjusts its resistance to match the instantaneous operating characteristics of the photovoltaic modules.
The PV heating systems offer the promise of being less expensive than solar thermal systems within the next several years – especially if maintenance cost of traditional solar thermal system is considered.
Cost of the System
The cost of the PV water heating system for a 150L geyser is typically R20 000 fully installed, on a standard installation.
Energy saving capabilities
The system will on average produce 5.5kW per day.
5.5 kWh x 365 days = 2007.5 kWh per year.
Average annual savings 2007.5 kWh x R2.20 (Average cost of electricity) = R4416.50
If an average of 8kW of hot water is used daily it is assumed the saving is
5.5kW /8 kW = 68.75% on hot water. This meets the requirements of SANS10400-XA: Energy usage on new buildings.
